Each week, we’ll highlight a major city in the US and cover the places and events you can go to in that area to get your security information fix. This post is part of the information security communities.
Mad City is best known as a university town with the University of Wisconsin-Madison being a top employer in the area. No wonder there are a lot of bright minds here that contribute to infosec. Here are a few local professional groups in this area.
- OWASP Madison, Wisconsin Local Chapter – Headed by Brian Spindel, this local chapter . You will probably get more info through the mailing list.
- ISSA Madison – The ISSA local chapter works using a Google site. There are scan details on other aspects of the group so be sure to head to that page if you want to know more.
- InfraGard Wisconsin – This InfraGard chapter covers the whole of Wisc, not just Madison. If you want to be a member, click here.
-
The Wisconsin Association of Computer Crime Investigators – Much like InfraGard, this is Wisconsin’s own computer crime association. Check out the meeting schedules here.
If your cup of tea isn’t the above, maybe a local meeting of informals are more your style?
- 2600 Madison – Get cozy every first Friday at the Fair Trade Coffeehouse. It’s a small group but you can find someone to contact on that page there.
And if you’re the hands-on type, there is one hackerspace you should look into.
- Sector67 – A collaborative space that aims to help ideas flow so inventions follow, or something like that. Nestled in two garage bays in the Isthmus, you can get started with free classes and work your way up.
Finally, here are a few security events to look forward to.
- Midwest InfaGard SuperConference – This is one of the biggest events of InfraGard which brings together many Great Lakes cities’ best and brightest.
- WACCI Conference – This group just held one of their annual conferences to talk about defending against cybercrime, increasing awareness and more. Wait for the next one this coming 2011.
There might be a few groups we missed. If so, feel free to chime in at the comments.
